PHILOSOPHICAL PAPYROLOGY

COURSE SUMMARY
The course will focus on the analysis of a series of papyrus texts that complement our knowledge of the tradition of Stoic philosophy in the ancient world. The lessons will be dedicated to the study of the material aspects of the papyri involved and to the commentary of their content.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Through this course, students will improve their knowledge of the sources of ancient thought and the methodologies for interpreting them. The texts will be read in original language (Ancient Greek).

OTHER ACTIVITIES BESIDE THE COURSE
The students who will attend will be involved in the mid-term international conference on Hierocles the Stoic organised within the ERC-CoG 101086695-APATHES.

It will be scheduled one laboratory activity in the Papyrus Collection of the Museo Egizio di Torino.


VISITING PROFESSOR PROFILE
The candidate must be a professor of Area 10 disciplines (FICP-01: Greek and Latin Philology, Ancient Christian Literature, Papyrology), an expert in the textual transmission of ancient, especially (but not only) fragmentary, texts. He/she must be available to set up lectures on the philology of papyrus texts of philosophical, literary, and/or documentary content, in collaboration with the Chair of Papyrology of the University of Turin, with particular reference to the papyri that are the subject of study within the New von Arnim Project (ERC-CoG 101086695-APATHES). The nature of the lectures will be a tutorial one and will provide an interaction between teacher and student on philological analysis and interpretation of the texts under examination. A curriculum vitae is required that proves solid teaching experience and an undisputed international profile of the candidate.
